Participatory ergonomics programs have been proposed as the most effective means of eliminating, or redesigning, manual tasks with the aim of reducing the incidence of occupational musculoskeletal disorders.This review assesses the evidentiary basis for this claim; describes the range of approaches which have been taken under the banner of participatory ergonomics in diverse industries; and collates the lessons learned about the implementation of such programs.Participatory ergonomics programs seek to maximize the involvement of the workers in this process based on the simple fact that a worker is an expert on his or her job.The participatory approach to ergonomics relies on actively involving workers in implementing ergonomic knowledge, procedures and changes with the intention of improving working conditions, safety, productivity, quality, morale and/or comfort.The majority of the projects has "reducing physical workload" as one of their stated aims.The paper begins by describing the framework to be tested and the methods used in the validation exercise.Successful, sustainable participatory ergonomics programs have an individual on the committee who takes on a leadership or "ergonomics champion" role ().Training principles and methods are central to the success of the participatory ergonomics process.

In April 2016, the 27 departments were randomly allocated using a random numbers table to a participatory intervention (14 clusters, 324 healthcare workers) or a control group (13 clusters, 318 healthcare workers).

This participatory ergonomics framework (the PEF) was validated through retrospective description of seven independently conducted case studies and through peer evaluation.

The exercise suggests that the PEF can be used as a first basis to produce practical guidance on participatory ergonomics programmes.

However, these findings are largely based on uncontrolled studies and thus lack to be confirmed by studies with better study designs.

In this article, we present the design of a study which aims to evaluate the effect and process of a participatory organizational intervention for improved use of assistive devices.
